Aims
The module aims:


The module is intended for students who have some previous knowledge of the Spanish language (A1 or equivalent) and it will progress in the study of the Spanish language and culture. The module will broadly achieve an outcome at level A2- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.


• To review, consolidate and further develop knowledge of main aspects of the Spanish language.

• To enable students to improve their Spanish language skills effectively.

• To enable students to communicate competently on a variety of general topics.

• To foster an understanding of contemporary Spanish society and institutions.

• To develop presentation skills in Spanish.

• To develop essay writing.

All the Spanish modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Spanish modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.
Learning outcomes 
Students completing the module successfully should:

A Demonstrate a reasonable knowledge and understanding of the main Spanish linguistic principles, structures and registers at level A2-.

B Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cultures and societies in Spain and Spanish speaking countries through cultural studies.

C Find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus, reference lists and timetables.

D Write a series of simple phrases and sentences giving information such as about their family, living conditions, educational background, present or most recent job.

E Enter into conversation about issues related to topics covered in class

F Apply a range of grammatical structures at an A2- level.

G Understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items at A2- level.
Method of teaching and learning 
• Core teaching takes place through Spanish language and study skills workshops with an emphasis on student-to-student interaction and all student participation.

• In addition, there will be guided reading and directed study to enable students to prepare for and reinforce class input and develop autonomous learning strategies. Online resources will also be used to complement contact sessions and workshops whereby additional information and resources can be made available electronically and on-line discussions between students and tutors can be held.
Syllabus 
• Most functional and notional topics studied at this level will be determined by the main course book. Class materials will be supplemented by online resources

• Oral activities will promote the basis for developing confidence, flexibility and fluency in conversations.

• As part of this module students are required to complete a small project which will include an oral presentation.
