Aims
To provide experience in designing, executing, analyzing and presenting results of (in a report) research in environmental science. This field class will give students an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in lectures to ‘real world’ problems and will also equip them with some key skills needed for the final year project.
Learning outcomes 
A. Plan and execute a research project in an independent and original way.

B. Analyse collected field data/samples following standard methods.

C. Perform quantitative analysis of data showing understanding of statistical principles.

D. Analyse, synthesise and evaluate information obtained from A,B and C by writing a research report.

E. Show evidence of effective team work.
Method of teaching and learning 
The main purpose of the module is to provide training in field work techniques in the environmental sciences, together with techniques of laboratory analysis (where appropriate) and statistical analysis of numerical data. The overall context is that of the execution of a research project by a small self-selected research team. The teaching methods include: introductory lectures before the field trip; demonstrations and discussions in the field; discussion and implementation of appropriate data analysis methods; and group presentations of research findings.

*Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.
Syllabus 
Preparatory meeting 1: Outline of the module; introduction to the environmental history of the area; possible small group research themes. Preparatory meeting 2: Discussion of research themes; establishment of equipment requirements. Field safety and personal conduct issues. Residential field class (Location: To be announced) Day 1: Travel, and introduction to field area (1) Day 2: Introduction to field area (2); setting up project work. Days 3-5 Group field work and preliminary data analysis.
