Module Catalogues, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
Module Code: ENV204
Module Title: Spatial modelling with GIS and Remote Sensing
Module Level: Level 2
Module Credits: 5.00
Academic Year: 2017/18
Semester: SEM2
Originating Department: Environmental Science
Pre-requisites: ENV101ANDENV203
To provide core competence in spatial modelling using GIS and remote sensing techniques and tools. This module will give students an opportunity to apply GIS and remote sensing principles and tools into practical situations such as those used in spatial ecology, and environmental management.
Learning outcomes
A. comprehend general principles and procedures of spatial modelling.

B. comprehend basics of remote sensing and image processing.

C. find solutions to stated environmental science problems by applying a range of GIS and remote sensing techniques (image enhancement and classification, model building, vector and raster spatial analyses, etc.).

D. analyse and evaluate these techniques in modelling environmental processes and phenomena, such as land use change and spatial ecology

E. analyse critically modelling outcomes and report results

F. apply spatial statistical techniques to assess the assumptions involved when applying procedures of spatial modelling.

G. integrate field and spatial analytical software tools to address specific environmental phenomena.

Method of teaching and learning
Introduction to the core spatial modelling concepts will be via lectures.

Practical skills will be developed through a series of well documented computer practical sessions, guided by lecturers.

Skills re-enforcement and personal development will be via independent work. The practical exercises take longer than the time span of the practical session and there is a requirement for further work before and after the lecturer-led session.
