Aims
The overall aim of this module is to give a sound foundation in the design of environmental experiments and research approaches so students are adequately equipped to complete individual research projects to the required academic standards in year 4. More specifically, this module aims to:

• Teach students how to plan a scientific research project.

• Provide students with training in research methods relevant to Environmental Sciences

• Develop students' understanding and appreciation of Environmental Science as a contemporary academic discipline

• Develop students' skills of critical analysis of published research

• Develop students’ skills of academic writing (standard paper format and academic referencing).

• Introduce students to writing a literature review and an academic proposal

Learning outcomes 
A. Demonstrate an up-to-date knowledge of research advances in a range of Environmental Science disciplines

B. Demonstrate a sound practical understanding of the principles of research design in Environmental Science and of the nature and appropriate use of different methodological strategies used in Environmental Science;

C. Identify a research problem or subject, write a proposal and design an appropriate research strategy;

D. Write a literature review in an appropriate style;

E. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a specific environmental topic through independently carrying out a project;

F. Confidently deliver an oral presentation to a small group;

G. Write scientific articles proficiently
Method of teaching and learning 
The module will prepare students so they can carry out individual research projects in Years 3 (as part of this module) and 4 (Final Year Project). The module will be delivered via lectures, workshops and seminars.

• How on earth do I start a research project: introduction to research design

• Work with others? Are you serious? Effective group work skills.

• Do I have to read and understand every word of scientific papers: How to read and summarise scientific papers

• How to write a literature review

• How to develop a project proposal

• What to include in the methods section

• Do I have to include every single data point I record? How to write the results and discussion sections.

• What to include in a conclusion

• Is the abstract the same as the conclusion, but at the beginning of the report?

• Writing popular science articles

• How to change a report into a scientific paper
