Aims
To develop essential study and disciplinary skills required by Environmental Scientists, both for their current studies and future employment.

• Introduce students to key approaches/concepts and ideas in the Environmental Sciences

• To help students identify and effectively employ appropriate sources of data and information

• Develop students' study skills and provide essential training for subsequent years

• Develop students' personal transferable skills.

• To introduce the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to Environmental Science
Learning outcomes 
Students completing the module successfully should:

A. demonstrate basic skills for finding accurate and up-to-date information using relevant sources (e.g. databases, academic journals)

B. apply GIS techniques in the real-world applications

C. deliver a basic scientific oral presentation supported by appropriate visual aids and references

D. use basic graphic, tabular and/or textual methods to produce a scientific poster

E. demonstrate their ability to write a scientific report at University-level standards.
Method of teaching and learning 
The module is delivered primarily by lectures and in small group tutorials. The lecture series will run weekly and will introduce the basics of GPS and GIS, followed by practical exercises. Study skills will be developed in tutorials and assessments will include writing a project report, preparing and presenting both oral and poster presentations.

*Should the University decide to cancel or postpone the field trip due to unforeseen environmental and/or political circumstances, the Department will either plan an appropriate substitute activity to meet the intended learning outcomes of the trip or make necessary arrangements to organise the trip at a later time, as appropriate.
