Aims
To introduce the basic concepts of digital image processing and pattern recognition.
Learning outcomes 
After successful completion of the module, the student should have:

A. An understanding of basic principles of digital image processing. An appreciation of the areas of applications for various image enhancement techniques.

B. Intellectual Abilities

After successful completion of the module, the student should have: An understanding of the techniques used in digital image processing.

C. Practical Skills

After successful completion of the module, the student should have: The ability to apply relevant image enhancement techniques to a given problem. Basic skills to develop image processing software.

D. General Transferable Skills

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to show experience and enhancement of the following key skills: Independent learning, Problem solving and design skills


Method of teaching and learning 
The module will be delivered via lectures and problem classes, which will include demonstrations of image processing techniques.
Syllabus 
1- (2) Introduction, Human Vision System, image acquisition, Spatial resolution of digital images, Effect of quantization, Measure of spatial resolution, matrix representation of images, Image storage, image display. Basic relationship between pixels, Imaging geometry, Distance measures.

2- (2) Image Enhancement; histogram processing; image smoothing and sharpening, filtering in spatial and frequency domains; High pass & low pass filtering.

3- (2) Image transforms; spatial frequency concepts; Walsh, and Hadamard transforms. Discrete Cosine Transform.

4- (3) Image Compression; Introduction to source coding, Types of redundancy Concept of lossless-lossy compression, JPEG/MPEG.

5- (2) Morphological image processing.

6- (2) Segmentation, thresholding, watershed algorithm, texture segmentation.
