Aims
This module will engage students in the study and practice of sound design and creative audio practices for digital media production. Students will examine the critical, theoretical and practical contexts of audio recording, sound design and sonic arts and their relation and integration in digital media production practices. The module will cover both contextual knowledge and understanding as well as practical workshops in sound recording, audio post-production and design, and the production of individual practical project work.
Learning outcomes 
A demonstrate the ability to critically analyse examples of sound design and/or sonic arts practices through drawing on critical and theoretical texts and practical examples;

B understand the conventions and practical techniques of audio sound recording for digital media production;

C understand principles and practices of working with hardware and software in the production of sound design and sonic arts production;

D undertake a sound design or sonic art practical project

Method of teaching and learning 
Lectures and practical hands-on workshops in media labs.
Syllabus 
The syllabus will typically include:

• Origins and developments of sound design and sonic arts;

• Theory of sound and digital audio/ sound recording for digital media;

• Key practitioners and their practices;

• Location recording;

• Studio recording;

• Foley work;

• Sound design for film soundtrack, game design, mobile media and the internet;

• Sonic arts, installations, exhibitions and performance;

• Mixing sound;

• Mastering and monitoring.
