Aims
The main aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of basic thermodynamics and kinetics.
Learning outcomes 
A_ Basic ideas of energy changes in chemical reactions

B_Ideas relating to the rates of chemical reactions

C_ Basic laboratory skills and report writing, including data and error analysis

Method of teaching and learning 
The module consists of 26 hours lectures, which are blended with 16 hours problem-solving tutorials and 10 hours laboratory experiments
Syllabus 
1/ System and environment, PV diagram, Ideal gas law, and Real gas.

2/ State, State functions, Internal energy, Work and heat, Reversible and irreversible processes, 1st Thermodynamics law.

3/ Enthalpy, Heat of Combustion, Hess' law.

4/ Entropy as a state function, 2nd and 3rd Thermodynamics laws.

5/ Gibbs free energy, Spontaneity of the processes.

6/ Chemical equilibrium, Temperature dependence of ln K.

7/Electrochemistry, half cells, cell notation, reduction half-cell potential, Nernst equation;

8/ Reaction rate and reaction order, Reaction rate constant k.

9/ Elementary step, Rate-determining step and reaction mechanism

10/ Enzyme kinetics: Michaelis-Menten model

11/Laboratory Experiments: the lab sessions include three thermodynamics experiments and two kinetics experiments
