Aims
The main aims of this module are to introduce the basic principles and techniques of engineering surveying; to introduce the practical procedures of applying onsite surveying.

Learning outcomes
A Understand the basic principles of engineering surveying for buildings;

B Determine the plan positions and heights of points using a range of surveying techniques; Levelling, traversing basics;

C Understand the methods of setting out of building construction;

D Perform calculations to decide the coordinates and elevations of points on the surface of the earth;

E Present the surveying results by digital and graphical representations.

Method of teaching and learning
This module is taught through formal lectures, tutorials (surveying instrument operation, AutoCAD) and carrying out surveying field works.
Syllabus

• Introduction of surveying, basic concepts.

• Direct distance measurement: tape and offset surveying;

• Levelling: measuring and booking levels; reducing levels: rise-and-fall method; height of collimation method (Field work 1);

• Traversing: measuring and booking angles; traverse surveying (Field work 2);

• Digital representation of surveying results using AutoCAD;
