Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with an in-depth and critical understanding of contemporary concepts in modern molecular immunology.
Learning outcomes 
A Describe and explain in detail the fundamental principles of modern immunology.

B Describe the molecules, pathways and cells involved in innate and adaptive immune responses, and how immune responses are regulated and co-ordinated

C Explain current understanding of the mechanisms underlying some important immune disorders and inflammatory diseases
Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching strategy is a series of formal lectures.
Syllabus 
Basis of immunity: Overview and perspectives of immune system and immune responses; - Innate Immunity: Toll-like receptors and opsonic receptors, and recognition/phagocytosis/complement system

Clonal selection of lymphocytes; tolerance; self/non-self recognition; adaptive immunity.

- Immune organs and cells of adaptive Immunity (Development/selection; APC (antigen presenting cells)/ B lymphocytes/T lymphocytes; NK; DC cells)

- Key immune molecules and functions (antigens; MHCI/II; cytokine; chemokine)

- B cell biology and humoral immunity (BCR; IgG; activation; signalling; memory, vaccines)

- T cell biology and cellular immunity (sub-types, maturation and activation of T cells; TCR structure, function, diversity, signalling and regulation; co-stimulatory signalling)
- Immune cell interactions;

Inflammation

- Immune disorders and mechanisms: Immune tolerance; Immunodeficiency, Allergy, autoimmune Diseases
